Knocking Over The Table (11,635 words)
Wiseguy, Sonny/Vinnie, explicit

The temperature started falling like a rock Thursday night. Vinnie had spent the day in Delaware, sweating through his linen suit while the thermometer flirted with the hundred degree line; he was picking up a box of guns for Sonny, pieces that had fallen off the back of a truck somewhere before they'd been registered.

Halfway back to Atlantic City, after dark, he stopped at a deserted gas station on the side of the road to call the numbers in to his lifeguard. By then, his breath was fogging in the phone booth, and the guns leached heat out of his hands one after another until his fingers were tight and clenched up with cold.

Post-apocalyptic Wiseguy, now? Well, you're obviously on the crack, but it's the good stuff so I'm not gonna complain. ::grin:: I shall have to read it again, not only because I always reread your stories, but because for the first I-don't-know-how-many paragraphs I was going, "No, she didn't. She can't have. She did!" This comes from seeing that you've posted fic and immediately going clickity-click without bothering to read the post title. (This is the first I've heard of the "Day After Tomorrow" challenge, btw. ::shakes head in disbelief:: )

Your Sonny, of course, owns my competency kink something fierce.

Happily-ever-after, huh? How do you do it? I bet the seasons are so f'ed up the corn doesn't even stunt. :: very purposefully not thinking about Uncle Mike. :: "La, la, laaaaa; I can't hear you!"

Everything is A-OK!
Oh, and I forgot to mention how much I loved motorcycle-riding Frank as The Postman.

PS. Can I trade Carlotta for Uncle Mike? Vinnie'd still have his brother and, of course, Sonny to comfort him. ::puppy dog eyes::
2nd-Oct-2006 02:44 pm (UTC)
sniffle. I would take that trade myself. snif.

Heeee! See, I think a highly competent gangster and a dedicated FBI agent are exactly who you want when you're struggling to rebuild civilization after the end of the world. *grins* (And it really is much easier to give them happily-ever-after when the rest of the world is just gone.)

Oh, LOVE. This was a fantastic read, thank you!

This, I do believe, is one of the best things I have ever found. Just.. gaah, so great. Because of course organized crime would know how to do organized survival.

I enjoyed this SO MUCH. Thank you.

of course organized crime would know how to do organized survival.

Bwaha. That is such a perefect summary for this story.

Because of course organized crime would know how to do organized survival.

Heeee! Yes, exactly! *grins*

Oh, this is so awesome. I think I've mentioned my total kink for people building a working infrastructure out of chaos, and creating and organizing communities and things like that, and this is just the perfect story for me. I loved the Postman book (before it turned into some weird kind of half-assed cyborg story near the end, at least), so the thought of them living in this growing little compound, with Frank being their postman, trying to rebuild their own little civilization... hell, yes.

Strangely enough, it worked even better for me because there's still this element of trial and error to it -- I laughed out loud at the early corn. (Although with their fucked-up weather, who knows -- corn might turn out to grow best right around christmas, shortly before the tropical heat wave in January. *g*)

Your pimping posts made me fall for this fandom, and I've been mainlining your fics yesterday, although I have yet to comment. I really loved all of them. Even though I'm sad that in this fandom, one has to go AU or destroy the world for a happy ending.

Awww, yay! And yes, I wanted them still flailing a little -- because okay, they are smart, they get they have to grow stuff, but these are city boys! wtf, corn! And I don't believe it is all that easy to farm with just directions from books. *g*

Hello. I'm taking five minutes out of a close reading exercise on Dickens and came over to check your website because that's what I do religiously every few days. Anyway, it occurred to me that I've never actually posted to say 'well done' or 'thanks' or 'OMFG, you rock', as I should have, and that makes me the most ungrateful, miserable wretch on the face of the earth. So - thank you very much for all the fic you have written, which continues to be fabulously written and intricate and bold and emotional and endlessly inventive. (It also continues to make me sickeningly jealous but I'm trying to be a better person about it. *Sulks and kicks sister in the shins* Not that much better though.) Thank you especially for the DC fic, which I love with a fiery passion that I normally reserve for Jensen Ackles. It inspires me with hope that one day the definition of the nuclear family will involve one evil criminal genius, one alien superhero, and their genetically engineered meta-human son (and his crime-fighting vigilante boyfriend). Hurrah.

In conclusion, thank you very much. Your writing makes the world a better, more interesting and emotionally fulfilling place. Which is no small thing these days.

Sorry. I probably should have mentioned something about this fic as well, because I looked back on my post and thought to myself, "Self, you completely neglected to mention how much the Post-Apocalyptic Wiseguy Convoy fic had you squeeee-ing like a little girl, despite the fact that you've never seen The Day After Tomorrow or Wiseguy." I loved Sonny and the way he just assumes control of this new family of refugees and I love Vinnie and his default setting of Sonny's second. Despite internal conflict and pangs of conscience and, y'know, the world ending, they still know where they are with each other. It made me meep.

I devoured the Day After Tomorrow challenge stories the first time 'round (...which were all much better than the film), and I am just all asquee about this. Competency in the face of apocalypse! It makes me happy.

I admit that I don't know the canon here very well at all, but this story made me happy anyway. The trial and error of it all, the reactions of the people they pick up, the rebuilding of civilization.... Mmm, survival at the end of the world. Tasty.

OMG!! this is FANTASTIC!!!

I think my favorite part is where Sonny finally makes Vinnie because I can SO see this happening!

Also, Sonny and Vinnie together!! WHEEEEEEEE!!!

Well that was nifty. I did see the movie (for free) and your fic was tons better. I love Wiseguy and it 's cool to see Sonny and Vinnie in an altered world, but still in character. Very original.

::laughing:: Haven't seen the movie, don't know the series, and man, I loved this. Thank you so very much for the competent criminal and the organized 'we're going to survive this.' The whole thing was wonderful.
9th-Oct-2006 09:05 am (UTC)
LOVED IT!!!!! totally agree with killing off the rest of the world so our boys can have a happily-ever-after. Have a warm, mushy feeling in my tummy now. *Sigh*...

I just love the beginning, where Sonny's all, "We have to take your family, because they are important to you, but the whole rest of the world can go hang." and Vinnie's like, "Well, yes, but my brother the PRIEST can't let people hang," and Sonny is grumbly and snarly and unhappy, but he immediately starts Taking Care of Anyone in Arm's Reach. It is awesome and strangely like canon.

Simply *awesome* storytelling. As always. I love how you can just get into your characters' heads, and how everything they do Makes Sense. The scene with the biker trying to bully and rob the caravan was simply perfect:
"The offer is down to one day's supplies. Say yes."
* cold shivers *
Very well done!

I adore this story. Sonny taking over, making everyone else part of the family, with Vinnie at his side, backing him up all the way - this was perfect!

Okay, so you went on your Wiseguy posting rampage while I was tragically absent from the internets, and I'm just getting caught up. Oh, bless you, woman! Bless you!!! There is no where near enough Sonny/Vinnie in this world.

I loved this story so much! Your note at the end made me laugh so hard (and, um, maybe then tear up a little) because it's true! Vinnie and Sonny can have a happy ending, and all it takes is destroying life as we know it! Oh how I wish the shows creators had chosen to go there. *g*

But seriously, you write such a fantastic Sonny! All that energy and charisma and fierce loyalty! Of coure he's just made to run a post-apocalyptic tribe of survivalists!

And thank you so much for saving Frank and letting us know what happened to him. Hooray, Frank!

*flails* This is unbelievably AWESOME.

Also, I apologise for not being good at coherent feedback when I'm overwhelmed.

*more flailing*

(which is why I've never sent you feedback on Oblivious even though it was one of the first fics I read in sga way back when, and still remains my favourite sga fic and my favourite wooby fic... And A Beautiful Lifetime Event which i ran around babbling madly about and making non sga people read it,,, yeah I liked that too *g*)

*dies of embarrassment*

I liked this a whole lot! And Frank as the Postman, hee!

I totally agree that the best way to give these guys a happy ending is to kill everyone else off, alas, but you did it with style.

What an enjoyable read. I love the reveal about Vinnie being a cop, and the way circumstances meant they had to temporarily put that aside and get on with staying alive. I love the way Vinnie doesn't have to turn his back on his job here to create a future with Sonny, since his job is gone. This is a great happily-ever-after scenario!
11th-Aug-2010 05:09 am (UTC) - AMEN
The Day After Tomorrow challenge is I think just the coolest idea ever, since how can it not be fun to make your characters deal with the end of the world, and also particularly excellent for Wiseguy, because it is one of the few believable routes to a truly happy ending—destroy the rest of the world! Then Sonny and Vinnie can be happy!

AMEN. It's divine intervention I swear... if even after the apocalypse, sonny and vinnie are together, it's meant to be ♥

You are an amazing writer and write an amazingly creative plot, and thank you so much for this amazing story... now that you have blown my mind and the only word I can manage to pick out of my fried brain is 'amazing' I will go read a thesaurus before I go looking for more of your amazing fics...
